There has long been a rivalry between the Big Ten on the basketball court between Indiana and Illinois, but the football field encounters between the Hoosiers and the Illini haven’t sparked much hatred lately. This is partly due to the fact that neither school has had much success in recent years, as has the Big Ten’s divisional structure.

Just a three-hour drive separates the schools, but this will be the first football game between them since the Hoosiers’ 24-14 win in Champaign during the 2017 season. This will be Illinois’ first trip to Indiana since 2013, a game Indiana has played with. 52-35 won. Three encounters in the past decade is a huge shift to a rivalry with both programs running every season from 1995 to 2013.

Indiana has had the better results lately, winning the last three meetings, but Illinois controls the all-time series with a 45-24-2 record.

illinois vs. Indiana: must know

This is already a crucial game for both teams: Both Indiana and Illinois hope to bowl this season, but neither is guaranteed to come. As fans of both teams looked ahead to their respective off-season schedules, this match was circled as one of the possible six wins needed. So while there’s no such thing as a “must win” this early in the season, this is a “probably should win” if they’re going to have a realistic chance of playing this postseason.

Indiana has lost nine consecutive Big Ten games: The Hoosiers were one of the biggest upsets of 2020, taking 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten in a shortened season with the only conference loss to Ohio State. Indiana couldn’t take that success into 2021, despite starting the year ranked in the big polls, 2-10 and winless in Big Ten play. That included eight consecutive losses to finish the season. A win on Friday would not only end the conference’s losing streak, but it would also be the team’s first win since a 33-31 win over Western Kentucky on September 25.

Illinois has yet to win consecutive games under Bret Bielema: Last year in Week 0, the Illini surprised people with an upset win over Nebraska. They followed it up with a 37-30 home loss to UTSA, the first of four consecutive losses. Last week, Illinois again won the Week 0 home opener, crushing Wyoming 38-6. It hopes that history does not repeat itself and tries to break a trend of inconsistency. While last year’s win in Nebraska was the only one to be followed by a string of four-game losses, the Illini were unable to post consecutive wins last season. After a win over Charlotte, they lost to Wisconsin. After beating Penn State on the road, they lost to Rutgers at home. After beating Minnesota on the road, they lost to Iowa. Although they enter this competition with a two-game winning streak (they ended last season with a win over Northwestern), winning consecutive games in the same season could be the confidence boost this program needs.

illinois vs illinois Indiana forecast, choices

Featured game | Indiana Hoosiers vs. Illinois Fights Illinois

Each team has an advantage that it wants to exploit in this game. Indiana has not announced its starting QB and has new coordinators. This means that Illinois has not been able to prepare for this match with any certainty of what it will see. Furthermore, Illinois played Saturday last week and had to put together a game plan for Wyoming before turning in a short week to play a road game against the Hoosiers. Meanwhile, Indiana has been able to prepare for Illinois all through off-season and now has a game movie that can dissect it. Of course, what Illinois is going for is that it has a game to its name. It will be interesting to see how that affects the game. I can’t quite read how this will go, but my gut tells me that neither team will blow the other out of the water, so taking the points with the Illini is the most attractive option. Forecast: Illinois +3
